The largest number of workplace accidents last year took place in the construction sector or in a public space, such as a transportation facility, according to the Accident Insurance Association (AAA).

In 2023, 17,409 accidents were reported under the general scheme in Luxembourg (the scheme that covers all people engaged in a professional activity), according to the from the Accident Insurance Association (AAA), published on 1 October 2024, representing an increase of 246 accidents compared with 2022.

Of these incidents, 14,273 were accidents at work, 3,003 were commuting accidents, and 133 were occupational illnesses. The AAA recorded an average of 101 reports per day, and the average cost of an accident was €4,328 in 2023.

While the number of occupational illnesses and commuting accidents fell slightly between 2022 and 2023, accidents at work rose sharply (405 cases), accounting for 81.99% of reported incidents. While the number of accidents increased, the frequency rate remained virtually unchanged, rising from 3.48% to 3.49%.

Building sites and the construction sector are the environments most at risk, accounting for 25.69% of accidents. Public places, particularly in the transport sector, follow closely behind with 24.92% of cases, while industrial sites rounded out the top three with 20.80% of incidents.

Almost half of the injuries recorded--47.58%--were superficial wounds or lesions, while 35% affected the upper limbs, with a particular concentration on the hands (1 accident in 4).

The typical profile of a victim of an accident at work is an employee aged between 46 and 50, working in the building construction sector. They work in a job that requires them to move around a lot, and are most likely to be injured as a result of a collision with a moving object.

The AAA has also announced that, from 30 September, accidents at work, commuting accidents and school accidents can be reported electronically via the MyGuichet.lu platform. Although paper declarations will continue to be possible, the new online option aims to improve digital accessibility.
