Around 100 UK nationals have yet to renew their Luxembourg residency permit following Brexit with an end of year deadline approaching.

The government in June for UK nationals to apply for their Luxembourg residency from 30 June to 31 December as around 490 people still had to file the relevant paperwork at the time.

“The immigration directorate observes a positive evolution regarding the application figures of UK nationals and their family members, pursuant to the withdrawal agreement,” the foreign ministry said in an email to Delano. “Based on the data available, the number of persons who still have to apply is estimated at around 100.”

All UK nationals who arrived in Luxembourg before 1 January 2021 because of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU must apply to update their status or risk losing their right to live and work in the country as well as access to social benefits if they fail to register with authorities.

Luxembourg has so far not refused any application of UK residents registered in the grand duchy before 31 December 2020. However, five applications were refused for UK nationals who could not prove that they lived in Luxembourg before that date. They therefore don’t fall within the scope of the withdrawal agreement, the foreign ministry said.

Since the opening of the application procedure on 1 July 2020, the immigration office has sent three information letters to UK nationals and their families to inform them about the necessary steps. The last one was sent in early November.

More than 4,000 UK nationals have registered for residency in Luxembourg as part of Brexit procedures.

The number of UK nationals seeking Luxembourg citizenship jumped in the wake of Brexit. While in 2015, before the referendum, 75 people gained citizenship, this number nearly doubled the following year. Between 2016 and last year, a total of 1,669 UK nationals obtained a Luxembourg passport.
