Audrey Gah works as a project manager for Amazon Web Services and, from the company’s offices in Kirchberg, has watched the city’s business district transform. She spoke to us about the neighbourhood and shared some of her favourite spots in it.

How do you like working in Kirchberg?

Actually, I love it. It’s really one of the modern, cool places of Luxembourg. When I started seven years ago, Kirchberg was not what it is today. From the office we saw work on the tram, the evolution of different buildings, how the main street JFK changed. It’s been an amazing transition.

How do you feel about the tram?

To be honest, I haven’t really used it. I still have the bus 16, which goes to my house. So it’s been convenient to just take the bus instead for my commute, since it goes door to door. [But] I do take the tram to town, to places like Hamilius, which is much easier.

What kind of vibe does the neighbourhood have?

Kirchberg is very professional… I’m sure people would call it the business district of Luxembourg. During the week you’ll see men in suits, what with all the different finance offices. At Amazon we don’t wear suits! So [laughing] sometimes we don’t know whether we’re in a corporate office [or what].

And in the morning, wow, the influx of people that come into Kirchberg from all sides of the country… and even from the border… you can just see that influx in the population. You step out for lunch and see all these different faces. The cultural aspect of the business industry in Luxembourg--you really get to see that in Kirchberg.

I’ve heard that Auchan is something of a religion over in Kirchberg. Is that true?

Oh, yeah [laughing]. I totally agree; it is truly the hub! It’s more of that, like--when you want to get something quick, you don’t really want to step out, you just want to grab-and-go…

If you do want to sit down, you have Vapiano--you can still do takeaway at Vapiano--although it gets a little bit busy at lunchtime. I think the salad queue tends to be reasonable, but the pizza and the pasta queue are just a nightmare! [laughing] I never get the pasta or the pizza, so at least I get my food a little bit faster! But then you also have [in Kirchberg] high-end restaurants where you can sit down. So, you get a variety of everything.

Do you have some go-to spots to recommend in the neighbourhood?

I would say the Mudam [the contemporary art museum]: it’s just one of those places that’s mesmerising with its architecture… and obviously if you love art, if you’re a culture person, it’s definitely a go-to place.

Another one would be Kinepolis--I mean, obviously! You need your cinema, your entertainment. And I love popcorn, so… anything to get me to have popcorn. And the cinema is definitely one of those places.

Then there’s one really nice Greek restaurant in Kirchberg, Ela. Really nice atmosphere.

Another place that’s not bad is El Barrio. They have a really nice rooftop. I think if you want to sell me anything apart from the food, just give me a good view! Then [laughing] I’ll eat anything.

Finally, there’s also a little park not far from the office where we go for team lunches. They’ve made it quite comfortable, with benches for people to chill and have a nice group atmosphere. So that’s really nice. We also take advantage of the walking path there, which starts behind Auchan [and goes southeast towards the Coque sports centre]. You can do a quick run at lunchtime or in the morning just, you know, to get your sanity back.

Thanks for your time, Audrey.

Thank you!
