Additional average speed radars are going to be installed in the tunnels of the Nordstrooss, on the A7, it was revealed on Monday 17 January. The 90km/h speed limit in the tunnels is often exceeded.

Though the exact date of the implementation isn’t known yet, this year will be dedicated to studying the case, RTL reported. The average speed radars will be installed on two towers--one on each side of the road--which would record the speed over a longer distance, in order to identify misdemeanours correctly.

, in its first month of operation a similar radar at the Markusberg tunnel on the A13 motorway  caught 6,433 drivers exceeding the local limit. The Markusberg radar was the second device of its kind to be implemented in Luxembourg. The first one is located on the N11 between Waldhof and Gonderange.

In addition to the 24 fixed radars dotted the grand duchy’s roads since 2016, the two average speed radars, and red light radars on the place de l’Etoile, the aim of the new radar is to discourage drivers from exceeding local limits.

Last year, 26 people died on Luxembourg’s roads, up from 22 in 2019, even though the overall number of accidents diminished by 20%--although the March to May pandemic lockdown could account for this decrease.

In addition to the red light radar on the Place de l’Etoile--which recorded over in its first month--, additional red light radars are to be implemented in Hollerich and on the Charel Marx intersection on the route d’Esch, according to RTL.

, transport minister François Bausch (déi Gréng) and Paul Hammelmann of the Sécurité routière  launched a campaign to promote safer driving, citing alcohol, inattentiveness and drugs as leading causes pf accidents. , 30% of all deadly accidents are ascribed to speeding.
