Belgian federal police officers are assisting the Grand Ducal Police during Friday’s mass demonstrations in the capital.

Luxembourg’s police force requested reinforcements from Belgium under the Benelux Treaty. The Belgian federal police are deploying about 100 officers, along with two water cannons and two armoured personal carriers.

Only officers from Belgium, and not any other countries, will be deployed in the grand duchy, a Luxembourg police spokesman told Delano on Friday.

. They are protesting a recent ruling by the European Court of Justice, which ordered a coal mine in Poland to shut down.

The Belgians join roughly 740 Luxembourg police officers who will be guarding the ECJ in Kirchberg and the Czech embassy in Limpertsberg (the case was filed by the Czech government), as well as the rally route between the two sites.
