Xavier Bettel has formally stepped down as prime minister following Sunday’s parliamentary elections, although he will remain as caretaker PM until the next government takes office.

gave his and his cabinet’s resignation to the grand duke on Monday, following standard Luxembourg political practice. Bettel and his ministers will stay in their posts until the new government is sworn in.

The grand duke will either next appoint an “” to broker coalition talks between parties or a “” to assemble a government. His decision is expected shortly.
