What if the real turning point for Luxembourg’s taxi market was not the arrival of Uber but that of Bolt? After Belgium, France and Germany, this new player in the taxi industry announced its arrival as “a natural step in its growth strategy” in a press release.

The race for the cheapest and most efficient taxi service is about to begin in earnest. One week after Uber’s first ride in Luxembourg, another major player, Bolt, has announced its imminent arrival in Luxembourg.

According to a press release issued on Thursday morning, the company with more than 150m users in over 45 countries in Europe and Africa is in contact with “several dozen taxi drivers who have expressed interest in joining the platform.” This seems to mean that the way to get around the reluctance of the authorities is along the lines set by Uber: only professionals who meet all the conditions such as social contributions or pension system and registration with the economy will ministry be fulfilled.

“While the platform is not yet operating in Luxembourg, Bolt is regularly in the top 10 most downloaded applications in the country (in May, Bolt was the second most downloaded application in Luxembourg). This shows the growing interest of Luxembourgers in shared mobility solutions.”

“Our rapid expansion in Europe has proven that users are looking for high-quality shared mobility services, and we firmly believe that Luxembourg is no exception,” says Bolt’s managing director in France and Belgium, Julien Mouyeket. “We already have a strong user base in Luxembourg who use our services when travelling to neighbouring countries. So it makes sense for us to explore launching Bolt in Luxembourg to meet this growing local demand.”

Already present in more than 45 countries in Europe and Africa, Bolt also offers mobility solutions in the form of scooters--not well regarded in Luxembourg City--and electric bicycles or car-sharing services.
