As Luxembourg is rolling out booster shots for people who completed their first vaccination schedule, the extra jabs will only be available by appointment, the government said on Tuesday.

Anyone in Luxembourg over the age of 18 is eligible for a booster shot, a third dose for those vaccinated with the Biontech/Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca formulas and a second dose for those who received the Johnson & Johnson inoculation.

The extra dose is administered six months after the first vaccination schedule was completed, except for recipients of two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine who will already be eligible after four months, prime minister Xavier Bettel (DP) announced during a .

For Johnson & Johnson, the wait period is only four weeks.

Bettel on Monday said booster shots would be easier to manage if people made appointments. Luxembourg had opened several drop-in centres to facilitate access to the vaccine and encourage people to get jabbed.

Eligible persons will be sent an invitation--as was the case during the first vaccination campaign--and appointments can be scheduled with the vaccination centres in Limpertsberg, Esch-Belval or Ettelbrück.

Only first doses will be administered without appointment at the three vaccination centres as second doses are scheduled depending on the first appointment.
