This summer Delano is asking readers to share “My home renovation”, a home improvement project that could inspire others. In today’s instalment: V and S describe how they transformed a 1990s-era home in Strassen.

Project overview

Names: V and S.

Occupations: Marketing manager and product manager.

Location: Strassen.

When did you start your renovation project and how long did it take? “We worked with , based in Bangalore, who remotely helped us design the entire space. The design phase for the project started in the beginning of March 2021 and we worked with Mike Weisen’s renovation team to execute the project. The execution began at the end of April 2021 and went on for a duration of two months. The space is slowly coming together with loose furniture, furnishings and lighting fixtures.”

Was it a new property or did you renovate an existing home? “We renovated an existing home that was constructed in the 90s.”

Why did you start this project and what did you want to accomplish with the renovation? “We fell in love with the space the first time we saw it. Renovating the space was primarily to keep its soul but create a space that functionally worked better for us.”

Briefly describe the work that you undertook. This question was answered by Bottlegreen Studio: “Our brief was to transform an old Strassen home into one that accommodated our client’s lifestyle, while predominantly reflecting a mid-century modern design language. It was a beautiful compact home with warm wood undertones that we instantly fell in love with. We decided to retain the doors and the wooden parquet flooring in the rooms with an intent of borrowing the charm of the home that it was. The majority of the renovation involved overlaying warm vinyl planks over the existing cold tiled floors and replacing the traditional fireplace and arches with clean lines to create uninterrupted perspectives. We kept the colour palette muted and played with colour blocking in the washroom and corridor to add character and direction. The balcony, overlooking a private garden, is sprinkled with delicate lounge furniture to soak in the view without taking away from it. We’ve provided multiple pockets to house indoor plants that our clients enjoy nurturing.”

Now that work has been completed, what are you most pleased about? Back to V and S: “We are most pleased with how the washroom has transformed. It was an unusual layout and had multiple technical challenges.”

Looking back at the project, what would you do differently now? “Both us and our designers are constantly thinking about a million different ways to do the same thing. It is an endless nagging feeling. As they say, a house is never finished.”
