The last British Airways flight from Luxembourg to London City appears to occur on 28 October at 7.45pm, raising fears that this favoured route may be the latest casualty of the airline staffing crisis.

Flights operated by British Airways between Luxembourg and London City have disappeared from online booking platforms from November 2022 onwards, prompting speculation that the UK-headquartered airline plans to cancel its popular route from the grand duchy into the centre of London from this autumn.

The last available flight travelling with British Airways to London City departs at 19.45 from Luxembourg on 28 October 2022, arriving in London at 8pm, according to the flight operator’s website. After this date, only flights to London’s Heathrow airport can be found.

At least one passenger has had all his existing Luxembourg to London City flights in November automatically rebooked by British Airways onto Heathrow flights.

“It’s surprising – since BA only launched the LUX-LCY route in late March and might now just quietly scrap it,” said the source, who preferred to remain anonymous.

Airlines have suffered huge losses since the travel restrictions imposed by the global pandemic, with major airlines such as Ryanair operating fewer flights to Luxembourg.

Although British Airways has fared reasonably well economically, with parent company the International Airlines Group reporting its first profit in three years in its second quarter results published at the end of July 2022, it has been hit by staff shortages. The UK flag carrier has also narrowly avoided strike action from staff who wanted to see their pay return to pre-pandemic levels.

The Luxembourg-London City route is a popular flight for those with business in the UK as it lands passengers at a zone 3 location in the heart of London only eight stops from the financial district of Canary Wharf. Heathrow, meanwhile, is in zone 5 with a lengthier journey.

Luxembourg airline Luxair continues to post flights between Luxembourg and London City.
