Esch-sur-Alzette district Belval will serve as the Capital of Culture HQ Nader Ghavami

Esch-sur-Alzette and surrounding communes in 2022 will be the European Capital of Culture, but the region will be hit by train disruptions during the summer months.

The Luxembourg–Bettembourg line will be closed for traffic from 16 July to 7 August because of construction works on the rails, transport minister François Bausch (déi Gréng) said in answer to a on Tuesday.

The route will partially reopen from 8 August until the end of the works, scheduled for 12 September.

Esch2022 is a year-long programme of events and exhibitions in Luxembourg’s second city and nine communes in the south--Bettembourg, Differdange, Dudelange, Käerjeng, Kayl, Mondercange, Pétange, Rumelange, Sanem and Schifflange.

“Most of the demand for mobility within the framework of Esch2022 is covered by the existing offer provided by TICE, CFL and RGTR. If necessary, bus capacity increases or occasional reinforcements will be implemented with the organisers,” Bausch said.

TICE and RGTR are local and regional bus networks.

Eight municipalities in neighbouring France are also taking part in the capital of culture programme but Bausch said there are no plans to increase cross-border public transport from the Luxembourg side.
