Luxembourg carrier Cargolux has signed an agreement with one of its clients, Bolloré Logistics, to help the company save 2,200 tonnes of CO2 emissions by using 800,000 litres of sustainable aviation fuel.

Bolloré Logistics is a supply chain operator present in 111 countries. The company on Monday signed a deal with Cargolux covering the use of 800,000 litres of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in joint operations.

“Building a strong partnership with a crucial partner like Cargolux is critical to enable the aviation industry to operate a transition towards a more sustainable future,” said Pierre Houé, deputy COO of Bolloré Logistics, in a statement.

Cargolux has foreseen investment in SAF-related projects over the coming years, the airline said. In its annual report, published in April, Cargolux said it would spend up to $100m “over the coming years” as part of its SAF programme launched in October 2021.

Luxembourg airport in March had announced that it would acquire part of sustainable fuel business Norsk e-Fuel, with a production facility to be built in Norway by 2024. Cargolux at the time said that it is in talks with Norsk e-Fuel to become an equity investor in the site.

“The development and availability of SAF rank high on Cargolux’ agenda. The airline has a dedicated SAF programme securing the acquisition of current and next generation sustainable fuels,” the airline said on Monday. “These initiatives, aimed at reducing both parties’ emissions, position Cargolux as an advocate for sustainability within the air cargo industry and hence global supply chains.”

Cargolux has pledged to be carbon neutral by 2050. Bolloré Logistics for its part has said it wants to cut emissions by 30% compared to 2019 by the end of this decade.
