The Irish embassy in Luxembourg has launched a competition for children to write a short story about a woman or girl who inspires them.

The embassy is hosting the writing contest to mark St Brigid’s Day. One of the patron saints of Ireland, St Brigid is revered for her courage, kindness and empathy. Communities celebrate St Brigid’s Day by commemorating female role models.

The Irish embassy is inviting children up to the age of 12 to share a short story about a woman or girl who has inspired them--someone they read about, saw on television or know in real life.

The story can be written or submitted in audio format (less than two minutes) to by 28 January. There will be prizes for the best stories.

St Brigid is the patron saint of poetry and learning and Brigid’s Feast Day on 1 February from 2023 is set to become a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, the first named after a woman.
