An unusual accident occurred on Saturday morning in a tunnel in the north of Luxembourg. Part of the tunnel’s vault came loose, spilling over four metres along the railway track. Maintenance work had been in progress prior to the incident.

The event took place around 11am on the Schierburg railway tunnel between Wilwerwiltz and Kautenbach. No injuries were reported. Part of the rocks behind the tunnel vault broke through the tunnel over a length of four metres and fell into the passage.

The tunnel was closed to rail traffic at the time due to ongoing maintenance work. "Studies are underway to determine the reasons behind this incident and analyses are being carried out to allow work to continue," national railway company CFL stated.

"All the work was carried out in strict compliance with the safety measures specific to this type of site. Thus, geological surveys and anchorages to guarantee the stability of the surrounding rock were carried out prior to the work,” clarified the CFL in an official statement.

This tunnel is located on line 10, which links Luxembourg to Gouvy and then to Liège.
