(To our readers: the Paperjam editorial team was in Dudelange on Thursday and Friday to meet the political, social and economic players in this municipality of 22,000 inhabitants. This article is part of that 'concentrated' approach. We hope you enjoy reading these articles.)
Dudelange, a “multidisciplinary and highly varied” town, is a model of integration and cultural richness. Founded on a history marked by immigration, it is now home to a large Italian and Portuguese community, and is a true example of multicultural harmony.
Locals describe it with affection: its centre, which is often referred to as “going to the village,” is a lively pedestrian zone with a mix of shops, terraces and meeting places. With its heritage sites, unspoilt nature and cultural events, Dudelange is an invitation to a unique discovery and a busy weekend.
Yet this vibrant cultural scene faces challenges. “We attract a loyal and regional clientele,” but it is difficult to capture an audience beyond the town, except for their major annual events, confides Cliff Schmit, head of communications at the Centre culturel régional de Dudelange (CCRD). This reality, often attributed to a ‘Luxembourg culture’ marked by a reluctance to travel more than 20 minutes by car, is accompanied by another challenge: attracting young people. “We don’t have enough unusual places” to arouse their curiosity, he explains. Nevertheless, galleries, museums and local cultural players are redoubling their efforts to diversify the offer and arouse interest.
