Rocks, pebble beaches and small creeks alternate on this part of the Adriatic Coast with crystalline water. The quality of water is, generally speaking, so good that many of the beaches possess the exemplary environmental quality label, the “Blue Flag”. Green pine forests, mountains which are almost 2,000m high and quaint national parks stretch in hinterland. The national park of Plitvice lakes is, in particular, an excursion which is worth a shot for its sumptuous waterfalls and its 16 turquoise blue lakes in the heart of a wooded mountains landscape. Only 2 hours by car from the coast, this Croatian national park, which is the most important, has been registered on UNESCO World Heritage since 1979.
