In his forecast for 2023, Goodyear’s senior director in innovation technology Romain Hansen talks about artificial intelligence, sustainable sourcing and more.

Advanced mobility solutions are transforming the tire industry and will accelerate throughout the following years. Goodyear is enabling mobility for success by investing in developing industry-leading digital products and services related to advanced energy efficiency, enhanced vehicle safety features and intelligent connected products.

In 2023 and beyond, key technology trends, especially in the areas of fleets, autonomous, connected, electric vehicles, sustainability and simulation capabilities, will continue to be the primary catalyst for most industries, driving improved productivity and inventing unique products and solutions to generate value for customers along the entire value chain.

Faced with these challenges, Goodyear will continue to deliver the next generation of service offerings around intelligent connected solutions to help our customers to reach their goals.

Goodyear is using applied artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms with real-world data and simulation results to understand product behavior, modernise and optimise processes. Data-driven decision-making engines are also playing a pivotal role in all areas of the tire development  process.

A “digital twin” approach

Goodyear also has extended its leadership position in virtual product development by expanding the vehicle/tire simulation capabilities with the new Dynamic Driving Simulator in Luxembourg. We are focusing on the technology of adopting a “digital twin” approach.

This digital representation of a physical product in all its aspects will help to achieve our bold goal of having only one physical iteration during the tire development phase. In this manner, we will increase product quality, overall production efficiency and delivery time.

Sustainability

Given the potential impact that a global supply chain has, Goodyear proactively seeks to understand supply chain risks and address them to support a healthy ecosystem. Sustainable sourcing is our approach to responsibly managing the materials we use for our operations and products. That includes our efforts to source sustainable natural rubber, increase our sustainable material usage, pursue raw material traceability, remove materials of concern and proactively manage supply chain ESG risks.

An example of the increased sustainable material usage is our award-winning innovative and environmentally friendly traction resin. This special resin replaces petroleum-based resins and is used in the manufacture of Goodyear’s passenger and commercial ultra-high-performance tires.
