The mortality rate in Luxembourg for 2021 has decreased by 2.6%, according to national statistics bureau Statec, which attributes the positive trend to better management of the pandemic as deaths related to covid also decreased.

A total of 4,489 deaths were recorded in 2021, with 405 fatalities attributed to covid down from 504 in 2020. This represents a decrease from 11% to 9% of total deaths being linked to the coronavirus. Statec is currently working on a more in-depth study of mortality rates in 2020 and 2021.

Since the beginning of the year, data from the health ministry show that 133 people have died as a result of a covid-19 infection. During the weekend of 9 and 10 April, five new covid-related deaths were registered. During this period 1,896 new infections out of 5,056 tests have been recorded. According to the health ministry’s latest report, 31 people were in regular care and three in the intensive care unit.

Statec’s figures for 2021 also point to a slight prevalence of mortality in the male part of the population which accounted for 51.1% of deaths with the remaining 48.9% representing deaths among women. The average age of the deceased in 2021 was 77.6 years of age, 80.7 years for women and 74.7 years for men.

In terms of nationality, Statec’s report shows that those with Luxembourg nationality account for 75.7% of deaths, whereas deaths of foreign nationality are much lower, at 24.3%. The statistics bureu explains attributes this to “the age structure of the population, which is younger for foreigners”.
