The CSV and LSAP would come out on top if voters were to cast ballots in the forthcoming general election this Sunday, according to the latest Politmonitor poll.

With 33 days to go until general elections, the latest national poll conducted by TNS Ilres--on behalf of RTL and Luxemburger Wort--showed a large victory for the CSV, with 28.3% of the vote if the election were held this Sunday.

The LSAP would come second with 19.8% of the vote. The DP received 17.4% of voting intentions. With 10.7% of the vote, déi Gréng would be in fourth place.

Current coalition retains majority

On the other hand, compared with the same poll carried out last April, LSAP would gain 1.9 percentage points (pp) of voting intentions, a bit more than the CSV, which would gain 1.2pp more voting intentions. Déi Lénk (+0.7pp), DP (+0.3pp) and déi Konservatif (+0.1pp) saw their voting intentions increase. All the other parties fell, especially the Greens, who dropped by 2.1pp.

According to this latest poll, conducted by Ilres on a of 1,887 people between 7 and 16 August, and the CSV would win 19 seats in the Chamber of Deputies (out of 60), two more than in the last poll in April. The LSAP would win 13 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, three more than at present.

According to the projections based on the results of the Politmonitor poll, the current coalition would retain a majority of MPs with 31 seats (13 for the LSAP, 11 for the DP and 7 for déi Gréng). But with 19 seats, the CSV is in a position to form a new coalition, either with the Socialists or by forging a new partnership with the DP and one of the three smaller parties, such as the ADR (projected to have 3 seats, according to the poll), déi Lénk (2 seats) or the Pirate party (5 seats). For the time being, such a strategy does not appear to be on the agenda, as Frieden has stressed that he is not in favour of an alliance with the parties at the extremes of the political spectrum. With regard to the Pirates, the CSV leader stressed that he did not fully understand the coherence of the programme presented by ’s party.

Xavier Bettel remains favourite for PM

When it comes to the post of prime minister, Luxembourg voters still seem to have confidence in  (DP) who, in this latest poll, received 34% of the votes cast in response to the question “Who should become prime minister?”.

Frieden received 21% of responses, followed very closely by (20% of responses). received only 5% of positive responses.
