The Skypark Business Centre South, revealed on Friday, comprises four floors of shops, restaurant, fitness activities, and offices, expected to be fully operational by 2022.
According to colleagues at Paperjam, the plans come two years after the presentation of the airport district’s master plan and are the first concrete project.
Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, who designed Google’s future headquarters in Mountain View, California, the building will be constructed in an ecologically sustainable way, in line with the area’s strategy to become CO2 neutral by 2020.
Wood will be a key construction material while the façade will be double insulated and topped with a green roof. Costing between €25m and €35m, the project will be financed through rents on the new space and airport taxes.
Lux-Airport CEO René Steinhaus said on Friday that he was not concerned about finding potential tenants. But, he was tight-lipped about the progress of discussions with the infrastructure ministry over the creation of an airport tax, which is also intended to finance the runway renovation. Running parallel to the project is the completion of the Findel underground station, as well as shops, scheduled for 2020.
