The family had been sheltered at the Moria refugee camp, which was destroyed by fire earlier this month. Luxembourg joined Germany, France and several other European countries in agreeing to host some of the people displaced by the fire.

The foreign ministry said another family and several unaccompanied minors would arrive in the grand duchy “soon”, bringing the number of refugees relocated from Greece since the beginning of the year to 125.

The family consists of a couple and their children aged 10, 8 and 7. They arrived at Findel airport on 29 September.

The family had been living at the Moria camp “for about a year”, Asselborn (LSAP), wrote on his Facebook page. Asselborn said the grand duchy had given the five “nothing exceptional. Just the guarantee that this mother, this father and the 3 children can live with us in dignity and security, as have thousands of people who have been granted international protection by us since 2015.”
