Altogether eight mixed teams competed for victory at the annual Kick Cancer Into Touch (KCIT) tournament on 19 August at Boy Konen Stadium in Luxembourg-Cessange.

Players ranged in age from 8 to 60 and since tackles are not permitted in touch, men and women pooled their fitness and skills to help score touchdowns throughout the day.

Players battled valiantly, aided by the weather, which stayed dry until the final at the end of the day, after which the heavens opened.

In the end, victory went to Touch Luxembourg, the club team. They were followed on the podium by DMS and Inadequate. Buvette & co came in fourth, followed by KCIT2, KCIT1, BBH and Amazon.

“We had some new teams, fresh blood and new faces,” organiser and KCIT chairman Joe Lister said, adding: “There was a real social atmosphere and it was more about creating an ambiance which made the day fun for the organisers as well as the players.”

The touch day has been running in conjunction with KCIT since 2005. In 2008, they also joined forces with the Rugby Club Luxembourg’s golf day to create the Des McKenna Perpetual Memorial Cup.

All proceeds go to the Fondatioun Kriibskrank Kanner and hospice Omega 90. The events were established by Joe and vice-president Mea Shepard in memory of Mea’s late husband, Tim Shepard, and Jess Lister, Joe’s sister, who were “beaten by cancer but both living in memory in a great day out for everyone to enjoy”.

Joe said: “It’s a day that they would have enjoyed equally. Lots of people here are touched by cancer or have family members going through it. Best wishes and love to the Thompson family.”

The president wished to thank all the supporters, volunteers and referees from the day.
