The prime minister had carried out a self-test that indicated he was positive and immediately self-isolated, the government stated. A subsequent PCR test confirmed the positive result and Bettel began a 10-day quarantine period.

Bettel has displayed “mild symptoms” of the virus, including a fever and headache, but his office said that he would continue to carry out his duties while teleworking.

Bettel received his first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine in May, and during an interview with RTL on Saturday had said he was expecting to get his second jab in July. He previously tested positive for the coronavirus in December 2020.
