Over a third of the 378km-long Bulgarian Black Sea coast boasts golden sandy beaches. And in the summer, expect 12 hours of sunshine per day and soaring temperatures. So what better alternative to the Mediterranean than Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach? Stretching 9km long and 150m wide, Sunny beach does exactly what is says on the tin. Not only that, it’s only a 30km-drive north from Burgas airport and rated one of Europe’s cheapest corners – so what’s not to like? This beach resort has everything you need to keep you and the family entertained, day and night. Make a splash at Action aqua park or have a go at various water sports on offer along the coast; tuck into local food at a beachfront restaurant or café; and why not carry the fun on into the night at one of the many bars and clubs that bring the coast alive come nightfall.

If all that sporty action and nocturnal fun has worn you out, slow the pace down and take time away from the beach to visit some of the nearby historic or natural spots. Unesco-listed Nessebar is only a 15-minute drive south from Sunny Beach, and is home to the beautiful church of Saint Sophia. Meanwhile, take a day trip out to the mystical mountains in the southernmost Strandzha Nature Park, taking in the views of the rolling countryside as you go. Excursions offer the chance to visit a trout farm along the Katun River, tasting local caviar and sparkling wine, before heading 320m up to the village of Brashylan, a historical architectural reserve displaying typical Strandzha wooden buildings from the 17th to the 19th century. Here, you’ll have the chance to visit the ethnographic museum, learn about the village’s turbulent history, and take a peak into the 17th-century St. Dimitar wooden church and bell tower.
