In the region of Calabria, the authentic charm of mezzogiorno, or Southern Italy, is still alive and strong. Situated in the toe of the boot, this long and narrow peninsula features many romantic seaside villages that are the locals’ favourite hideaways. Head 28km south of the airport and you’ll first hit the medieval town of Pizzo. Facing the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia, you’ll find the somewhat unassuming, rocky-faced Chiesetta di Piedigrotta, and hiding inside the chapel’s caves are a multitude of mystical carved stone statues depicting religious scenes. Before you head off onto the next stop of your tour, make sure to try the local tartufo dessert - an ice-cream bomb with a surprise centre!

Head slightly inland into the Serre Mountains, and at 800m high, you’ll find the Carthusian monastery Certosa di Serra San Bruno, not far from the village of the same name. After a visit to the museum, take the pilgrimage path to the sacred Santa Maria del Bosco, a sanctuary amongst the trees, with a tiny pool and an 18th-century church.

Jutting out of the promontory is the “Pearl of Calabria”. Tropea is quite possibly the prettiest town on the coast, built right on the edge of the steep cliffs at 42m high. On a good day you can even see Stromboli scarring the horizon in the distance. While down below, the crystal waters dazzle 50 shades of blue, and the town’s emblematic Santa Maria dell’Isola church sits blindingly white in contrast, perched on its own rock and accessible via a zigzag of carved stairs. Finish your tour a little further south at Capo Vaticano’s finest beaches, Grotticelle and Tonicello. End the day with a refreshing apertivo, snacking on local ‘nduja spicy pork spread, and indulge in views of the Aeolian islands afar.
