The historic cinema, which had been closed since 30 November 2018, worked with a specialist Swiss company to tackle the problem.
“In order to ensure the complete elimination of parasites, sanitation was carried out in the Cinémathèque as a whole, including in the foyer,” a press release issued by the City of Luxembourg stated.
The specialits firm used heat treatment, with temperatures of between 60-70°C, to ensure any bugs were eliminated, and then employed sniffer dogs to confirm the success of the treatment.
Bed bugs and eggs die within 90 minutes at a temperature of 48°C, or immediately at temperatures 50°C and over.
In an attempt to ensure the circumstances are not repeated, the Cinémathèque has also arranged a preventative control plan, including a sniffer dog inspection of the premises once a month at first then in longer bimonthly to quarterly increments.
Doors will open to the public on Monday at 6pm for the 6:30pm screening. Click here for the lineup of films and events.
