The Danes have, in fact, come out top in a UN ranking of the world’s happiest nations three times since 2012, undoubtedly owing to the hygge, or Denmark’s answer to la dolce vita. Hygge is a typically Danish concept that is difficult to translate but basically encompasses the notion of friendliness, a warm, cosy feel and the tendency to appreciate the simpler pleasures in life, and Copenhagen offers a thousand different ways in which to enjoy this way of life.

The City of the Little Mermaid is particularly well known for its many parks and gardens, which provide a great place to enjoy a stroll and a picnic in the summer months. One of the most famous is undoubtedly Rosenborg Have, or Kongens Have - ‘the Garden of the King’ - a Renaissance park, the oldest in the city, characterised notably by its extensive lawns and magnificent rose garden.

Another of the things that make Copenhagen so unique is its city centre and its many colourful, paved narrow streets lined with little shops and lovely restaurants that are great to explore either on foot or by bike - the preferred method of transport among the Danes. Skt. Pedersstræde, Larsbjørnsstræde and Teglgårdsstræde are among the most popular, but there are plenty of other parts of the city where you can enjoy a good stroll, such as the Latin Quarter, which has historically been very popular among students, or even Nyhavn - an old port with a very relaxed atmosphere. 

Of course, we couldn’t talk about Copenhagen without also mentioning its modern architecture and its taste for design, with the new opera house designed by Henning Larsen, Jean Nouvel’s Koncerthuset and even the extension to the royal library, which also houses the Museum of Photography, among the latest achievements erected in the city over recent years. The Designmuseum is also, of course, a great way to familiarise yourself with this art of decoration that has become so dear to the Danish.

Last but not least, no stay in the city would be complete without a quick canal tour, taking in its main monuments (Amalienborg Palace, the opera, Christiansborg Palace, etc.) from a different perspective and paying a quick visit to the city’s symbolic Little Mermaid perched atop her rock as you go.
