This week’s Delano Live looked at stress in the workplace, its cost to both employers and employees, and what bosses and staff can do to prevent and treat burnout in the office.

Panellists shared the signs of burnout and what workers and bosses can do to improve the situation on Tuesday evening. Speaking on the panel:

The panellists agreed that burnout is a process, a downward spiral, and not a specific moment in time. They agreed that people suffering from burnout need to seek professional help and not try to manage the situation on their own.

Müller said that negative workplace environments cost Luxembourg’s economy €2bn a year in lost productivity. He also cited research showing that staff at smaller firms experience less stress than employees or large organisations.

At the same time, Baxter noted that many larger companies offer effective staff support services that remain confidential. And she suggested that managers seek training so they know the signs and first steps to take with employees who are facing burnout.
