- Luxembourg has the world’s 19th most globalised economy, a drop of one place from 2016, according to a Swiss economic research institute. The grand duchy ranked just behind Slovakia and just ahead of Singapore in this year’s KOF Index of Globalization. However, in the “economic globalization” subcategory (which “reflects the extent of cross-border trade and investment and revenue flows in relation to GDP as well as the impact of restrictions on trade and capital transactions”), Luxembourg came in 3rd behind Singapore and Ireland.
- A new 14 floor tower, with 138 flats, is being built in Differdange, next to the Opkorn shopping centre. The delivery date for the 58-metre structure has not been set; generally, construction only begins when 50%-75% of a building’s surface area has been sold. The apartments go on sale this weekend during the Urban Living expo.
- Companies that provide access to the internet in the grand duchy are not required to keep track of connections made via wifi, the government said on Thursday. Under the e-commerce law, last revised in 2000, service providers “cannot be held liable for the information transmitted” over their networks, except under certain circumstances. In response to a parliamentary question by Taina Bofferding of the LSAP, the communications, economy, internal affairs and justice ministries said there were no plans to update the bill. Anyone on the streets of Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Azette can access the free Hot City wifi network. That scheme could be extended to the country’s the rail and bus network starting next year.
- The City of Oslo has voted to go 100% electric mobility by 2025. The Norwegian capital’s council wants to be the first city in the world with exclusively zero-emission cars and public transport.
