Luxguard II management would finally proceed with a collective dismissal plan, according to Tuesday’s OGBL press release.

A job retention plan to be spread over 24 months was concluded on 31 August after several months of tough negotiations around Guardian's desire to merge its Bascharage and Dudelange sites, which would have led to the axing of 201 jobs of the 453 that the company has in the grand duchy. Guardian wants to shut down the Dudelange furnace due to the declining demand for flat glass in western Europe. The agreement ultimately called for the abolition of 62 jobs.

With management wanting to proceed with other dismissals, OGBL denounced the "real affront" and questions the job retention plan which could, according to the union, have found solutions for the 49 job cuts announced. "A social conflict has now become inevitable," per the union.
