Honorary distinctions are awarded by the grand duke as part of the grand duchy’s cultural traditions for outstanding personal or professional achievements. Education minister Claude Meisch (DP) on 22 June presented two honorary distinctions in the Order of the Oak Crown and in the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. These two-awards form part of the four main hierarchies with the grand duke as the master of these four orders. Both honorary distinctions, ususally awarded on National Day, come from the grand duke upon the recommendation and countersignature of the minister of state.

The knight of the Order of the Oak Crown award was presented to Joëlle Fromes ép. Colling, and Hubert Jacobs van Merlen received the Grand Officer of the Order of Merit award. Colling works with the Ministry of Higher Education and Research with Van Merlen wearing different professional caps as a member of several board of directors and an advisor to private equity organisations. These awards were presented in recognition of their commitment to higher education and public research in Luxembourg.
