On Tuesday, Lycée Edward Steichen in Clervaux opened a primary for the first time to 20 English speaking pupils, the fifth of its kind in the grand duchy. On Wednesday, the secondary opened to 20 students in the English section for years 7-9 (L1-3).

“Some more will join at the end of September or beginning of October,” school deputy head Max Wolff told Delano, adding: “What we also can see is that people are slowly moving up to the north as there is now an international school in Clervaux. So we will enrol more and more children in the English section.”

On Wednesday, students, pupils and parents received an official welcome from school principal Jean Billa before receiving a tour of the school. Youngsters at the primary spent the morning playing games in the classroom, meeting their new teachers and doing their first language tests, Wolff explained.

In addition to the English section, the primary school currently accommodates around 70 pupils in the French section and 20 in the German section. At secondary, the numbers are 90 and 60, respectively.

The school recruited some 21 new teachers for the primary, of which five will teach exclusively in the English section.

“We are also in the process of recruiting one more teacher for the English section,” the deputy head said. A further 10 teachers have been hired for the international sections in the secondary school.
