Disagreements over the use of synthetic chemicals regularly hit the headlines; there are debates about glyphosate*, neonicotinoid insecticides, endocrine disrupters and so on.

We all are concerned. The use of pesticides contaminates seriously our environment: loss of biodiversity, the huge mortality rate of bees, and this is not to mention fears for human health and human beings from residues in our food, our drinking water, etc.

Gardening enthusiasts who want to grow healthy vegetables which their family can eat, now have the opportunity to produce them without using any pesticides, insecticides, etc. We should regain our biodiversity and garden with nature but without pesticides, as you rediscover the pleasure of having a harmonious garden, of picking healthy fresh produce and the enjoyment of welcoming the gardener’s friends: bees, birds, hedgehogs, butterflies and so on. We should choose the products while being aware of the origin of their production and the consequences of their use. Select alternative natural products and learn techniques which prioritize ways of natural growing and assure the natural balance in our garden.

“Wildlife in our gardens like insects, hedgehogs, etc …, is the gardener’s friend and not a foe.”

Changing over from a non-eco-friendly garden to a natural garden won’t happen in a single season. Therefore, to share good practice with gardening enthusiasts, the supermarket Cactus offers some “Let’s Garden Naturally” workshops. During these hands-on training sessions, you will be explained how to create an environment where your plants will thrive without any chemical fertilizers, etc. being used. You will also be shown how wildlife in our gardens (insects, hedgehogs, ladybirds, birds, etc.) is the gardener’s friend and not a foe.

The way we look at our gardens and lawns is going to have to change: without using chemical weed killers – so let’s accept this and make the most of the daisies and clover that are growing back on our grass. Cactus no longer sells selective weed killers for lawns. A natural garden provides plenty of healthy relaxation and loads of enjoyment!
