Sitting 1 mile north of Fuerteventura and a mere 15-minute ferry ride away, Isla de Lobos is the perfect place to get away from it all. The last permanent inhabitants of the islet left in the 1960s, when the El Faro de Martiño lighthouse was automated. And so these days, it’s home to day-trippers, local weekenders, plenty of native birds and a lone restaurant. Many visitors decide to hit the beach at Playa de la Concha, soaking up its stunning views and clear blue waters. But if you wander slightly further, this outing will become your own personal desert island paradise, giving you the chance of solitude and contemplation, while immersed in nature’s purest offerings.

The island is full of walking trails, including the first stage out of nine that makes up the GR131 route (Camino Natural de Fuerteventura) that crosses Fuerteventura from end to end. Otherwise, touring the whole island by foot will take you three or four hours, covering around 13km of trails across this protected ecological zone.

The ferry docks at the idyllic El Puertito, the island’s only settlement. If you’ve come without a packed lunch, do make sure to book at Chiringuito Antoñito on arrival – it’s the only restaurant here! From there, take the track past Playa de la Concha, leading through volcanic landscapes to the island’s highest point: the Montaña de la Cadera caldera (127m), with its panoramic views of the Canaries afar. Continue on your journey to the northern most point at Punto Martino, home to the lighthouse which was built in 1865. For a change in scenery, the walk back to the harbor takes you via Las Lagunitas, an area of flat saltwater lagoons which is fantastic for bird watching. As you arrive back at El Puertito, tuck into a well-earned meal of paella or fresh fish and potatoes, before taking the ferry back to Corralejo across the shallow Bocayna Strait, feeling Zen and with the promise that you’ll definitely come back again.
