The latter initiative is set to open by 2022, with works to commence in autumn 2020.

The express pathway connecting Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette will extend nearly 28km and pass along the A4 motorway. The path, which will have a maximum gradient of 6% and width of up to 4.5m, will be carried out in parallel with other transport infrastructure projects.

The section connecting Esch with the Belval quarter is 2km in length. Rising some 7.5m from the ground, it will be the longest cyclable footbridge in all of Europe once it’s completed, according to the ministry. A portion of this path will also include an underpass beneath the level of the railway tracks. Total costs for this path are estimated at €36m.

The completion of the two initiatives will, according to the transport ministry, nearly double total cycle path network to just over 1,100 km, compared to 632km in 2015.
