As the temperature rises, head to what is considered to be the “green lung” of Munich, the English Garden. Dating back to 1789, it’s one of the world’s largest urban public parks, offering acres of landscaped greenery to the south, while the north remains a quieter, more natural affair. Stroll the grounds, pack a picnic or even stop off for a beer and regional bites at the Seehaus biergarten on the banks of the Kleinheeseloher lake. With almost 2,500 seats, you’re sure to be in good company as you guzzle from steins while sitting along the waterfront.

Come summer time, many a Münchener will tell you that the city’s urban beaches are where it’s at. On the long Isar bike trail from Wolfratshausen to Freising, there’s the Isar stone beach along the river’s banks, plus the adjacent southwesterly-facing Muffatwerk beer garden that seats 400. Meanwhile, further south of the city centre in the Sendling district, the Flaucher beach on the island of the same name has a myriad of sunny spots for sunbathing and paddling in the river. Quench your thirst at the Zum Flaucher beer garden that’s hidden away from the hustle and bustle, surrounded by woodland and can only be accessed by foot or by bike.

Surf’s up! Well, at least at the Eisbach it is. Flowing through the English Garden, the small Eisbach river is home to an artificial standing wave that truly is one of a kind, and it sees seasoned surfers ride the wave all year round!
