Only a mere 20km away from the airport in Figari, Bonifacio is a hidden gem in the Mediterranean. The old town sits majestically atop limestone cliffs that have been chiselled away by the wind and the waves over the years, leaving the buildings above to teeter on the edge dramatically. Meanwhile, the yacht-lined harbour snakes its way 100 metres in land, dotted with grottoes and coves as it goes. Now the scene is set, work your way around the old town and ancient citadel, before getting up close and personal with the cliffs that characterise this city, tackling the Escalier du Roi d'Aragon (Steps of the Aragon King). This path of 187 steps cut directly and diagonally into the cliff face lead down to the cave of St Barthelemy's well. The nail-biting descent offers spectacular 180° views of the calming blue waters and also Sardinia beyond.

Having worked up a sweat, cool off with the sea breeze and a dip in the deep blue. Make a day trip of it, heading out to the Lavezzi islands. Sail past Bonifacio’s rocky coastlines towards this archipelago that holds a myriad of postcard-perfect paradise beaches. Opt for a day of soaking up the sun in this blissful haven, or head out and test the waters – the area offers some of the most amazing diving spots around!
