Faced with the industrial dominance, traditional local food production suffered, at times disappearing and taking with it a whole local economy that once provided employment and was a source of cultural wealth. For local producers it seems that this long, difficult period is now behind them. Conscious consumers want to support small local producers and local shops.

The responsible consumer searches for local chains which are making links with producers in the Greater Region. First and foremost because those producers can supply excellent products using the qualities of the raw materials from our terroir to their best advantage, but also to promote:

  • respect for the environment,
  • short circuit retailing,
  • taste and freshness,
  • expansion of the regional economy,
  • regional employment.

Regional producers committed to environmentally-friendly and quality-orientated production methods become more and more preferred business partners. Marketing and advertising are not their primary focus; their job is to be out there producing food. The job of the retailers is to introduce them to us, costumers, so we all can enjoy what they produce and they can continue developing.

To provide the partner producers with greater support and enable them to expand, some local chains have set up various schemes together which aim to further improve their production and promote a high-quality offer. They create their own logos and labels which guarantee the quality of those products while respecting nature and animal welfare and enable a regional economy to develop. They support start-ups in the food sector and encourage by that a culture of innovation.

The local producer become our regional “Food Heroes”. What they all have in common is that they all work day in day out to produce only top-quality products. “They” are: brewers, cheesemongers, winegrowers, fish farmers, distillers, slow-baking bakers, cattle breeders, producers of spelt, buckwheat, vegetables, fruit, oils, mustard, organic honey, potatoes, organic eggs, seeds, herbal infusions, natural soaps, organic milk and so on.
