Jess Bauldry: How did the idea for Love Letters to Luxembourg come about?
Amanda Roberts: My business partner, Meredith Moss, and I were talking about a mural in Austin, Texas. It's a wall with the words “I love you so much” painted across it. It has become a place where residents and visitors go to take photos in front of in a celebration of the city and of life. We thought it would be exciting to do something similar in Lux, to get people engaged with the city and with each other around local art(ists).
Our magazine is all about celebrating Luxembourg and so we started thinking about ways to expand the project and the idea developed into two elements: one that gets people moving around the city to interact with different local artists’ takes on what they love about this wonderful country and a second part where everyone can get involved by writing his/her own love letter to Luxembourg.
JB: Tell us what the artists part of the project entails and when and where can we see them?
AR: “Love Letters to Luxembourg” showcases the works of six local artists who have created unique pieces of artwork, painted on large pieces of wood in the shape of postcards.
The freestanding murals can be found throughout the city of Luxembourg for everyone to enjoy. Every mural has a special theme--symbols of Luxembourg, the Royal family, multiculturalism, architecture of Kirchberg, the wine region. We are happy to feature the works of Chiara Dahlem, Raphael Gindt, Michel Kremer, Stick, Joël Rollinger and Daniel Mac Lloyd. The works of art are already on display and will remain up until 2 July.
The murals can be found in the following locations:
- Outside the Cercle Cité (Symbols of Luxembourg by Chiara Dahlem)
- Charlie's Gare (Multiculturalism by Stick)
- Neimenster (Wine by Daniel Mac Lloyd)
- Place du Theatre (Architecture of Kirchberg by Joel Rollinger)
- Parc Pescatore (Multiculturalism by Michel Kremer)
- Rue de la Semois (The Royal Family by Raphael Gindt)
JB: How can the public get involved in Love Letters to Luxembourg?
AR: We hope people will go around the city and find these 6 incredible pieces of art. The idea is that people will interact with the art, take photos of themselves and share on social media with #loveletterslux.
We put out a call to our readers asking for their very best photos of Luxembourg and chose 6 images that feature on postcards (for people to write their love letters to Luxembourg on). The winning images were taken by Kristi Roberts, Nathalie Barbosa, Abhinav Malasi, Andrea Pernettová and Alexandra Allen.
The postcards will be made available to tourists, expats, original Luxembourgers, and children of all ages. They will be distributed in various schools and companies to make participation easier. Postcards and drop boxes will also be available starting next week across the city in various locations including:
- Cercle Cité, 2 Rue Genistre, 1623 Luxembourg
- Colisée Restaurant, 26 Place Guillaume II, 1648 Luxembourg
- Nordic Stella, 3 rue du Nord 2229 Luxembourg
- Brasserie Wenzel, 28 Rue Münster, 2160 Luxembourg

JB: What will happen to these love letters?
AR: On 29 June, we will have an event at the Cercle Cité where we will display all the postcards we have collected. We will also invite people to write and hang their own postcard on the spot if they haven't yet participated. Of course, there will be Bernard-Massard crémant and a celebratory atmosphere. The postcards will remain on display at the Cercle Cité through 1 July.
JB: What would be in your love letter to Luxembourg?
AR: Meredith and I are still working on our own personal love letters to Luxembourg, but here is one from City Savvy Luxembourg:
Dear Luxembourg,
We're sorry everyone thinks you're part of Germany. You deserve so much better. You are multiculturalism at its best. More than 170 nationalities not only living together peacefully in this tiny country, but also learning from each other daily.
Sometimes we tire of bumping into our butcher, hairdresser and neighbour at the pool, but when you need to top up your glass of crémant you've always got at least 3 instant babysitters on hand.
You've helped these 2 American girls change their careers and grow a business all around their love for you. So, don't worry we are here to stay and let people know about your openness, your endless green spaces, top notch wine and all your other hidden treasures.
Yours truly,
City Savvy Luxembourg
