Breakfast show presenter Tom Clarke welcomed Duncan Roberts into the Ara City Radio studio on Monday morning for the regular Delano’s Top of the Week slot.
As usual, the talk between a Delano journalist and Tom focused on the big upcoming news story of the week. There is no getting away from the Conservative Party leadership contest, the result of which will be announced on Monday lunchtime. If, as expected, Liz Truss is proclaimed the winner she will fly to Balmoral in Scotland on Tuesday to be appointed prime minister.
Tom and Duncan discussed the leadership contest process--fewer than 200,000 members of the Conservative will have voted for their preferred candidate--and how the expected result of the membership ballot differs widely from the choice of Conservative members of parliament, who were overwhelmingly in favour of rival candidate Rishi Sunak.
That is largely because, as Duncan and Tom agreed, the party members are mostly older, middle-class and white and favoured a hardline Brexit. Truss, despite campaigning for the UK to stay in the EU ahead of the 2016 referendum, has pandered to their whims.
When she becomes prime minister, Truss will face several challenges including the cost-of-living crisis, the continued economic impact of Brexit, a struggling National Health Service and geopolitical problems posed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the growing distrust of China.
Duncan then provided listeners with three “what’s on” tips for the coming week including the in Kirchberg put on by den Atelier and featuring the likes of Tash Sultana and Tom Walker, the of Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winning dark satirical comedy Triangle of Sadness, and the .
Finally, Duncan’s track of the week was Bass Face by Gemma Cullingford from her brand-new album Tongue Tied.
Tune in again next week on Monday around 8.30am on or listen to the podcast on Delano.
