I am, as you may have guessed, Johannes Brahms’ cycle of symphonies! If this charade has tickled your curiosity, then you will certainly appreciate diving into the four-part musical challenge that the famous Romantic set himself in the autumn of his life.
Brahms was in fact already forty years old and had an extensive creative record when his first symphony was written. Why did he refrain from trying his hand at this iconic musical genre for so long? Nervousness! A great admirer of Beethoven’w, he was convinced that he could never match his spiritual father in either panache or virtuosity... And yet, once he got started, he ended up making history with four monumental masterpieces that continue to amaze performers and music lovers alike all over the world.
Now it's your turn to discover their timeless magic during a two-day "symphony marathon" at the Philharmonie! After an introduction by the renowned music critic Christian Merlin, Sir John Eliot Gardiner will lead the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra to bring them to life on 10 and 11 May.
Four symphonies, a prologue and two evenings... challenge accepted!
