In this episode of Newsmakers family therapist Domitille Desrousseaux provides her insight on the problems married couples face in Luxembourg as we delve into the reasons for the high divorce rate in the country.

Statistics have been cropping up in recent years indicating a divorce rate of somewhere between 80% and 85% in Luxembourg. Domitille, who has been practicing in the grand duchy for 12 years, works for the most part with expat couples.

“They are far from home and far from their extended families, sometimes quite lonely here. A lot of them say very early on in their appointments ‘our parents are not here, our families are not here’. So, they don’t have a lot of backup when children are concerned. When you don’t have time for your children, you don’t go out as much or you go out with your children,” says Domitille.

A reason often put forward for the high divorce rate in Luxembourg is that people can simply afford it. While legislation introduced a few years ago allows for one of the members of a couple to get a divorce without needing their partner’s signature. Tune in on to find out more.
