American meal delivery giant Doordash has acquired its British counterpart Deliveroo in a deal worth £2.9bn (€3.4bn), the two companies announced on 6 May 2025 in a joint statement.
“Both companies are highly complementary, whether in their geographic footprints or their missions,” said the companies, adding that the acquisition will strengthen Doordash’s position as a global platform.
Based in San Francisco and founded in 2013, the American company now claims a presence in more than 30 countries and generated sales of $10.7bn in 2024.
Deliveroo, also founded in 2013, operates in nine countries: Belgium, France, Italy, Ireland, Kuwait, Qatar, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the UK. After years of losses due to massive investment, in March the group reported an annual profit after tax of £2.9m on sales of £2.1bn.
The companies commented, in their statement, that combining the companies’ existing reaches will cover an area serving some 1bn people. It remains to be seen whether this global expansion will one day extend to Luxembourg, where it could strengthen the position of Wolt--Doordash is Wolt’s parent company--against competitors Wedely and .
