DuPont currently has four units operating in Luxembourg. Hytrel and DuPont Teijin Films, both of which are located in Contern, are set to pass into the ownership of Celanese. Around 340 employees currently work at the two units.
“We are excited to welcome our future colleagues from DuPont who have built a world-class product and technology portfolio which is highly regarded in the industry,” stated Lori Ryerkerk, Celanese chairman and CEO. “Our businesses are highly complementary which will accelerate our growth in high-value applications including future mobility, connectivity and medical,” he added.
This transaction will also generate value for DuPont’s shareholders which was highlighted by the company in a press release.
Last November it became clear that DuPont was looking to offload the two sites, which surprised trade unions LCGB and OGBL. A series of meetings between the unions and DuPont were held, including one last week, at which the unions were given assurance that the sale will not result in any lay-offs. The units are expected begin operating independently from 1 October, according to press release by the LCGB and the OGBL.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the LCGB and the OGBL said they will continue to follow details of the transition of the units to ensure that there aren’t any negative effects on the employees.
Dupont produces Tyvek in its Contern production site, a material that was in great demand during the pandemic and which was used in medical protective clothing. However, DuPont has clarified to Delano that the Tyvek and Typar units on the site in Contern will continue to be part of the company.
