International School of Luxembourg upper school maths teacher Elizabeth Cutshall lives in Merl and works on its fringes. She shares her top picks in the area.

ISL teacher Elizabeth Cutshall teaches mathematics to students aged 12-18. The school offers an international baccalaureate diploma programme, and Cutshall teaches the mathematics application and interpretation course.

She also serves as the school’s ski coach in the winter months. “We typically attend one or two training sessions and two or three competitions which all take place at different locations in Switzerland,” she says. “We are proud compete in the Luxembourg competition held in Adelboden Switzerland each January.”

A former actuary, Cutshall has called Merl home for 15 years. Prior to her arrival in Luxembourg, she taught mathematics in Taiwan, South Korea and the US. For her, Merl is an ideal location for walking. “After living in Los Angeles for 13 years it is a joy to walk to work and to go out in the evenings,” she says.

When she’s not walking, she’ll hop on a bus or a Vel’oh but adds, “The only reason I own a car is so I can go skiing whenever I want.”

The ISL teacher is often busy grading papers or finalising her lesson plans, so it’s rare she leaves the site even during lunch hours, but she finds plenty of opportunities to explore the district on weekends and evenings.

Her picks in the Merl area offer a number of ways to dine out or simply unwind after a long day at the office.
