Esch-sur-Alzette’s mayor Georges Mischo has unveiled details of a security plan for the city which will see the installation of surveillance cameras and an improvement of lighting in selected areas.

A final version of the plan will be unveiled in the first quarter of 2023 ahead of the elections in June. The Esch mayor said that the current security plan dates back 20 years and it is time to adapt. The project, which is currently being developed, will see the installation of cameras in certain areas that have still to be determined. There is some clarity on where they will be most needed, with the town hall square, the Brill Square and the railway station being identified as some of the locations for the surveillance equipment.

The footage taken by the cameras will not be viewed live like in Luxembourg City but will be recorded and viewed only following a request by the police. It will also be stored only for a certain period.

“Cameras are only part of the solution,” said . New lighting installations will aim to improve visibility in the city. The southern city’s mayor reassured that this is done with consideration for the current energy crisis and highlighted that LED lamps, which consume less energy, will be used. "The aim is not to make the whole city brighter, but to ensure better lighting of critical sites,” he said.

clarified the use of video surveillance stating it should only be used in areas where there is a risk of committing serious crime.
