The redevelopment of the Place de la Constitution and the Place de la Gare is still in the preparatory phase, but the City of Luxembourg intends to adapt its plans.

The project for the into a public square by Latz + Partner Architectes-Paysagistes is to be reworked, Luxembourg City Mayor (DP) announced on the morning of 16 November.

The jury--on which the City sits--had deliberated on 29 June 2021 on the winner of the competition chosen to redesign the square. Announced last September, the project will see the disappearance of the Place de la Constitution car park and its transformation into a vast multi-purpose space.

"But it is understood that the disappearance of these parking spaces will be effective once the expansion of the Knuedler car park is completed," the mayor insisted. As for the planned removal of trees from the space that houses the famous Gëlle Fra, the City says it is opposed to this and specifies that Latz + Partner Architectes-Paysagistes-CBA Architectes is open to discussion to "see how to spare the trees as much as possible".

The Place de la Gare in question

Another redevelopment mentioned is that of the Place de la Gare, but it remains unclear at this stage. The City of Luxembourg says that it has already worked on the issue, and that the final word should theoretically go to its owner, the CFL.

"We would like to organise a citizen consultation for all those who use this space, not just the 12,000 inhabitants of the station area," insisted (CSV), first alderman.

Initially, the space will be occupied by the expansion of the CFL headquarters. "It is only in 2024 that the specifications will be drawn up for the creation of the Place de la Gare in 2025 or 2026", said Polfer.

Mobility minister  (déi Gréng) has mentioned the possibility of an underground bicycle park. The municipal authorities insist on the notion of popular consultation to decide on the purpose of this space. An information session is planned for next year.
