Covid-19 infections in Luxembourg saw a 3.4% decrease between 6 and 12 September compared to the week before, with 553 positive cases detected.

The decrease in positive tests came after people’s return from holidays saw an increase in covid-19 infections in late August.

The health ministry’s weekly report published on Wednesday indicates that between 6 and 12 September, 553 covid-19 cases were diagnosed. The previous week 573 infections were detected which indicates at 3.4% decrease. This is not due to fewer PCR tests being carried out as the number of those was slightly higher--29,633 compared to 29,057 the week before.

The majority of the tests (21,254) were carried out as part of the large-scale testing programme (LST), followed by prescriptions (6,473), contact tracing tests (1,353) and tests via airport vouchers (553).

The positivity rate of LST tests was 0.48%, while those following a doctor’s prescription resulted in 5.75% positive cases detected.

Non-vaccinated and partially vaccinated people represent 67.8% of the total 553 detected cases. While the remaining 32.2% were fully vaccinated patients.

The family circle is once again the main source of contamination (30.6%), followed by trips abroad (20.1%), leisure (5.2%) and education (4%).

Same as the week before, two covid-19 related deaths were recorded.

Hospitals saw 29 new covid-19 patients being admitted in regular care, compared to 22 the week before. In the intensive care unit, there were ten patients, up from nine, all of which were not vaccinated. The average age of hospitalised patients went down from 60 to 47.

Between 6 and 12 September 6,070 anti-covid vaccines were administered. 3,415 people received their first dose, 2,598 their second and 57 people their third. The government announced on Tuesday that it will offer to people aged 75 or over. Previously, it had already made an extra dose available to people suffering from impaired immunity.

The total number of administered vaccines in Luxembourg is now 775,270 with 398,431 people fully vaccinated.
