Less than 2% of Luxembourg train passengers have opted to pay for first class since the introduction of free public transport.

A bit more than 14.5m passengers travelled on Luxembourg’s national railway (CFL) between March 2020 and July 2021. A mere 294,831 of them travelled in first class.

The figures were provided by , the mobility minister (Green party), in response to a parliamentary question from MP (Pirate party).

The grand duchy’s government made most public transport--buses, the tram and second class train service--free in March 2020, however passengers still need to buy first class tickets.

Bausch stated that first class ticket sales netted €414,000 for the railway between March 2020 and August 2021.
