Since its creation in 1992, the European Ecolabel has certified products and services with a low environmental impact. Nearly 100,000 products have been awarded this European label, but only nine of them are in Luxembourg.

According to the latest count, 98,977 products have been awarded the European Ecolabel, which acts as a benchmark in Europe for distinguishing products or services that are environmentally friendly. Also known as the EU Ecolabel, it was created in 1992. In Luxembourg, certification for the label is verified and issued by the Environment Administration with the support of Oekozenter Pafendall. It should be noted that the economy ministry Luxembourg also issues a “Luxembourg Ecolabel” for sustainable tourist accommodation.

The application process for the EU Ecolabel involves seven stages, including registration of the product (or service) in an online catalogue, compilation of an application file and payment of the application fee. If the assessment is positive, the application is approved.

Only nine products in Luxembourg have the EU Ecolabel, compared to Belgium’s 4,053, Malta’s 57 and Cyprus’s 62. In front are Italy and Spain, with 15,399 and 14,570 respectively. In Luxembourg, the majority are cleaning products, paint-type products and a tourist accommodation service.

The only service to benefit from the EU Ecolabel is the Mercure Luxembourg Kikuoka Golf & Spa in Canach, which obtained the label in January 2025. It is the first hotel in the country to receive this European distinction, which rewards establishments for adopting sustainable practices in areas such as water and energy management, waste reduction and the use of environmentally friendly products.

Flowey in the lead

When it comes to EU Ecolabel-certified cleaning products, there are four from Flowey. Founded in 1990 and based in Bissen, this company specialises in cleaning detergents with ranges tailored to both professional and private customers. The company has an R&D department and pays close attention to ecological issues. It uses environmentally friendly raw materials and eco-responsible manufacturing processes. For example, its products are concentrated to reduce waste. It offers products with biodegradable formulas, with active ingredients derived from plant sources and designed to be compatible with water recycling systems, promoting sustainable management of water resources. The manufacturer also favours formulas without methanol, considered toxic for the environment and humans.

Four of Flowey’s products are EU Ecolabel-certified. The first is a cleaning product called Glass Green, designed for the routine care of all types of windows, mirrors and display cabinets. This product even has three other certifications: Vegetal Base, Cradle to Cradle and Shop Green. Two of its other products, "Multi Green" for all types of surfaces and "Floortec Green" for floor cleaning, have the same labels. For cleaning washrooms, Flowey has also designed "Sani Green", which also has the EU Ecolabel label.

Probiotic group

Another company with EU Ecolabel-certified products is Probiotic Group, based in Weiswampach. The laboratory specialises in microbiology-based biotechnology and offers probiotic-based cleaning and care products. These living micro-organisms can help to balance the microbiome of the skin or surfaces. In this way, they provide protection against the proliferation of harmful bacteria. The company, which raised €2.5m in 2022, wants to work towards “solving public health problems by calling on nature.”

Two of products from Probiotic Grouphave the the EU Ecolabel: firstly, the Denaa+ Friendly Descaler. This is a vegan cleanser designed without the use of animal testing. It’s made from water, citric acid and lemon flavour, and is fully degradable. The second certified product is Denaa+ Toilet Cleaner, an eco-friendly toilet cleaner that contains no chlorine or other environmentally harmful ingredients. It is also vegan, not tested on animals and biodegradable.

Peintures Robin

As well as cleaning products that have been awarded the EU Ecolabel, there are two other types of product in Luxembourg that are also certified. These are paints from Peintures Robin. This company, founded in 1927, says it wants to take up the challenge of sustainable development and offer ecological solutions and eco-responsible products designed in Useldange. In the manufacture of its products, the company says, it is determined to replace all petroleum-based raw materials with renewable resources. In its R&D laboratory, the company develops paints using bio-sourced materials such as flax, miscanthus, algae, oyster shells and waste.

The company has won the Fedil Environment Prize four times. Two of its products are EU Ecolabel certified: Dispersol Premium Base 2 White, a high-quality vinyl latex that contains no oils or plasticisers; and a paint called “Formula 12.”
